Pellet Manufacturing Since 1990

Authentic. Bonafide. Comprehensive.

In 1990, California Organic Fertilizers introduced California organic farmers to pelletized feather meal, meat and bone meal, and bone meal. More than three decades later, the details still matter.

A fertilizer pellet is not simply an ingredient pressed into a convenient shape. How that pellet is manufactured can influence whether the nutrients become available when the crop needs them.

Compression matters. Pellet diameter matters. Heat treatment matters.
Binder selection matters. Raw-material quality matters. And formulation matters.

What's Actually In The Product

No fillers. Ever.

Fertilizer labeling law requires a manufacturer to disclose the nutrients it's making a claim on — the guaranteed analysis. It does not require every ingredient in the bag to be listed. That gap leaves room for inert bulking material to be added to a product without ever appearing on the label.

Some manufacturers use lower-cost filler ingredients to reduce the cost of the finished product while still meeting the guaranteed analysis shown on the label. That may make the fertilizer less expensive, but it also means part of what the grower is buying contributes little or nothing to crop performance.

COFI takes a different approach. Every ingredient in a Phyta-Grow® or Phytamin® product is there because it contributes to the guaranteed analysis or the performance of the finished fertilizer — nothing is added simply to lower cost, add weight, or increase volume.

If it's in the product, it's there to do a job.
Guaranteed Analysis

No Planned Variance. Ever.

Fertilizer law allows for guaranteed-analysis deficiencies within established official allowances or tolerances. COFI does not use this allowance in its formulations — in fact, we attempt to over-formulate, since natural raw materials can vary in nutrient values.

Nutrient Release

Predictable Pellet Degradation: Measurable Plant Availability.

A pellet that remains intact in the field after harvest did not deliver its nutrients when the crop needed them. Excessive compression, excessive processing, or poor pellet specifications can slow physical breakdown and nutrient release.

Formulation can create another problem. Using inexpensive ingredients with low Plant Available Nitrogen to reduce manufacturing cost may make the guaranteed analysis look acceptable while providing less usable nitrogen during the crop's critical growth period. COFI has used the same process since 1990 with the same consistent results.

Farmers work on tight budgets and face increasing regulation on crop inputs. The fertilizer applied must decompose and be available during the crop season.
When The Soil Needs Some Help

Maximizing Soil Vitality with Microbially Facilitated Pellets

Organic fertilizers depend on biology. But not every field begins with the same level of biological activity. In soils with low biological activity, conventional preplant fertilizers may not mineralize rapidly enough to supply nutrients when crop demand begins.

COFI developed Phyta-Grow® Kickstart for those situations. Kickstart incorporates high-quality compost directly into the fertilizer pellet — introducing biological activity where it is needed most: in direct contact with the fertilizer ingredients that need to decompose.

Instead of waiting for the surrounding soil biology to find the pellet, the biological component is built into the product.

Fertilizer

Pre-plant dry material engineered for controlled nutrient release.

+ Biology

Compost blended directly into the pellet, in contact with the ingredients.

+ Moisture

Field moisture drives decomposition and nutrient release on schedule.

Microbe-charged compost core: accelerates natural decomposition and eliminates nutrient release delays.
Dry Fertilizers

Phyta-Grow®

Phyta-Grow® pre-plant fertilizers build the fertility base a crop draws on through the season.

Phyta-Grow® products have a C:N ratio below 4:1. The higher the C:N ratio, the lower the amount of nitrogen available to the crop. "Microbes eat first" is a well-known statement meaning they have access to the nitrogen before the crop does. The amount of nitrogen consumed by microbes is directly related to the available carbon — so the higher the carbon, the less nitrogen for the crop.

Highly soluble nitrogen starts dissolving into soil moisture almost immediately, with visible plant response typically appearing within the first week. The bulk of the nitrogen is spent within the first month, and the remaining fraction is largely gone by around six weeks.

Application rate: use sparingly — can burn roots if overapplied Soil moisture: nitrogen moves with available moisture Placement: incorporation speeds uptake

Compost blended directly into the pellet puts biological activity in contact with the soy meal from day one, accelerating breakdown beyond what field microbes alone would do. Most nitrogen releases through day 45, ahead of a standard soy meal product, with the remainder tapering through the season.

Only a small fraction of total phosphorus is immediately plant-available. Microbial and acid-driven solubilization gradually frees additional phosphorus over years, not months — a single application builds long-term soil phosphorus reserves rather than feeding one season.

How fast is each liquid actually available?

Different liquid nitrogen sources become plant-available on different timelines. The products currently featured here use natural ammoniacal nitrogen.

Ammonia-Based
Immediate

Ammoniacal nitrogen is already in a plant-available form on contact with the soil — no mineralization required.

Fish-Based
Within Days

Fish proteins and oils are already partially broken down through processing, with full availability typically within a few days.

Plant-Based
Within Days

Hydrolyzed plant proteins release nitrogen quickly, typically within a few days of application.

Phytamin® Humic Acid is a soil conditioner, not a nitrogen source, and isn't included in this comparison.
