Crop Program · Almonds

An organic almond program, timed to peak demand.

A foundation nitrogen program built on CDFA FREP and UC Davis almond research: a dormant Phyta-Grow® Leafy Green Special base, then in-season Phytamin® Jumpstart delivered when the tree needs nitrogen most — bloom through June.

Why timing matters

Almonds take up most of their nitrogen between bloom and June.

UC Davis research shows almond nitrogen demand peaks from bloom through mid-June, and most of the season’s uptake is complete by the end of June. In organic orchards, background nitrogen from soil organic matter, cover crops, and compost is substantial — but it mineralizes slowly and unpredictably, and rarely lines up with that peak. Phytamin® Jumpstart delivers nitrogen that is immediately plant-available, applied precisely when the tree is pulling it.

The role of this program: it supplies targeted, plant-available nitrogen at peak demand — complementing, not replacing, the nitrogen your organic system provides from cover crops (roughly 100–200 lb N/acre when terminated), compost, and native soil organic matter. Your total nitrogen budget should account for all sources.
The nitrogen budget

Where the nitrogen comes from.

A 2,000 lb/acre kernel crop removes roughly 136 lb N/acre (about 68 lb N per 1,000 lb of kernels, UC Davis). This program supplies a reliable, well-timed share of that demand; the organic system supplies the rest.

The dormant Phyta-Grow® Leafy Green Special application builds a base over winter, mineralizing as soils warm. The three Phytamin® Jumpstart applications land inside the bloom-to-June window, when the tree pulls nitrogen fastest and immediate availability matters most.

Supplemental applications: additional in-season Phytamin® Jumpstart applications may be necessary based on field data — leaf tissue tests, soil nitrate, and yield target. Adjust with your PCA.

This program is a starting point, not a prescription. Actual nitrogen rates must be set for each orchard using its yield history, leaf tissue analysis, soil nitrate, nitrogen in irrigation water, and contributions from cover crops and compost. Over-application wastes nitrogen and risks groundwater. Finalize your program with your PCA or Certified Crop Adviser.

Growing Organic Almonds: Why Timing and Prevention Matter

Explore how nitrogen availability, weed competition, navel orangeworm, disease prevention, orchard-floor preparation, harvest timing, and transition risk interact across the organic almond season.

Graph showing how nitrogen availability in organic almonds varies throughout the season, with different curves representing various organic fertilization methods. The X-axis shows almond growth stages from dormancy to postharvest, and the Y-axis shows relative nitrogen demand and availability. The graph highlights peak nitrogen needs in early summer and notes that later nitrogen application contributes less to crop growth.
